Instow boasts a beach and dunes but is actually on the river rather than the sea, albeit the estuary and the sea are a hunky bloke's stone throw away.

Sitting on Instow beach you look across the River Torridge to Appledore, which was once second only to Liverpool for the import of tobacco.

The signal box at Instow, found at the end of the old platform near the road crossing, has been restored and is open to the public during the summer months.

The track runs behind the village through a deep cutting and through a tunnel but for a more scenic walk or ride you can leave the track and travel along the main beachfront road.  By doing this you will pass the village amenities, including village stores, pubs and restaurants.  There is also a ferry service to Appledore (dependant on tides I presume).  Access points to the trail in Instow are at the Signal Box, at the dunes car park and further down near the cricket club.

The tunnel behind Instow . . . whoooooooooooooo
