Picnic Stop, Instow
Looking back across the Taw at the Civic Centre and the boat bridge.
The new downstream bridge dominates the view of Barnstaple from the trail.
First stop out of Barnstaple is Fremington Quay, where you can get refreshed, hire a bike or just sit on the grass, enjoy the view and soak up the rays (while applying adequate sun block and wearing a hat!)
The Quay enjoys wide views of the estuary and beyond to Heanton.
The Taw sweeps past the Quayside in a large arc.
You've been riding a while now, take a break, get out of the saddle and sit on the grass for a bit. Watch the river, or turn around and watch the other cyclists pass by.
The bridge takes you on towards Instow and Bideford beyond
There's a long straight flat stretch between Fremington and Yelland. Great if the wind's behind you but if the wind's in your face you'll swear it's twice as long . . . and up hill!
Who says no-one's building affordable housing in North Devon anymore! You could probably pick this little 'do-er upper' up for less than £100,000. Well, possibly less than £200,000.
