Bridges and
Tunnels of the Tarka Trail
As it's based on
old railway bed and runs alongside the Taw and Torridge rivers there is a
veritable plethora (I didn't get my A level in English Lit. just for turning up
you know!) of bridges, cuttings and tunnels. Some of them are old, some
modern, one's only just been finished and another is in the middle of a
refurbishment. For civil engineering fans here's a collection of images of
them.
Barnstaple Downstream Bridge
Not strictly part of the trail, but visible from it, I've included it because I like the picture.
The meandering stretch of the Torridge between Bideford and Torrington cuts under the trail several times and is where Tarka (not real you know) was born.
Above Beam Weir the river can be mill pond smooth. If you're very lucky you might even see an otter, but don't hold your breath.
I have a feeling I might be using that caption a lot in this section
Bideford got their graceful new downstream bridge some years ago. The jealous inhabitants of Barnstaple stamped their feet and griped until they got their own (smaller) version.
It's in Barnstaple. It's long. It's a bridge. Quite a good name for it really then.
One of the newest bridges on the trail, the shape of the swing bridge over the Yeo is evocative (oh that's a good word) of the boats that pass beneath it
The bridge from the inside
The traffic free alternative for crossing the Taw
It's in Bideford. It's long. It's a bridge. Just like Barnstaple's, only more interesting.
The multi-sized arches of the bridge. See, told you it was more interesting than Banstaple's. Or, possibly just less tidy.
Is it me, or did they just chop the bottom off the plans for the Torridge bridge?
The second longest on the trail
The longest tunnel on the trail. Not just slung together this you know.
The longest iron bridge on the trail. It's like the Guinness Book of Records this isn't it. No, I suppose it isn't really, no.
It's not only Barnstaple that's getting a new bridge, Watergate's getting a makeover too
Upstream from Bideford, at Landcross, is this curving iron bridge that overlooks some pool of herons or something from the Tarka book. I haven't read it, I don't really know what I'm talking about. Can you tell?
Not strictly part of the trail, but visible from it, I've included it because I like the picture.
