Railway Remnants
Based, as it is,
on old railway track bed, you'll find lots of reminders of the Tarka Trail's
railway heritage along the way. Some are there because they haven't been
taken away, some have been painstakingly restored and others are reconstructed
to add flavour to you visit. Here's a selection.

The rails still in the road at Yelland
The old Torrington Station building is now the Puffing Billy pub
Don't you just hate it when people leave their bogies in the hedge? (Yeah, I know a bogie has multiple wheels but why let facts get in the way of a schoolby joke?!)
This level crossing is outside the Police station in Braunton, so try not to go off the rails!
For some people a gnome in the front garden is enough but there's always someone who wants to go one better.
There are lots of these dotted along the trail but the ones between Barnstaple and Braunton have been spruced up and painted. I have no idea what they mean.
The platform and restored signal box at Instow
One of the restored lengths of track to be found along the trail. This is at Instow.
This one is paired up with the Instow signal box
The building at Fremington is new but based on the original Quay buildings, which were actually on the other side of the track
Before Barnstaple became the end of the line this was the town station. It now houses school facilities and sheltered housing.
As well as station buildings you'll find carriages and working locos on Bideford station's short stretch of remaining tracks
