Exercise is good
for your art.
Building a bench?
Easy; plank of wood, two supports and, ta-da, a bench. Well yes, I
suppose, but take the basic recipe, add in a little artistic flair, perhaps a
pinch of mosaic, bake in the North Devon sunshine and you get a whole different
class of support for your bum!
Sprinkled along
the trail you'll find an imaginative array of seats, benches, marker posts and
sign posts. Here's a selection of photos of just some of them.

You'll find a number of these Sustrans marker posts along the trail.
These stone and metal marker posts grace many of the stops along the way.
On the climb from Torrington to Watergate you'll find some full time residents on the benches
Last time I tried this I got a slap. And quite rightly too, right on sisters. Mind you, he must have a terrible time buying shirts.
Between Watergate and Merton you'll find a series of mosaic seats depicting, I suppose, wildlife characters from Tarka the Otter. Peters Marland marks the highest point on the trail.
From what I remember of the Tarka film isn't there are hunting dog in it or something? Or am I getting it mixed up with The Belstone Fox? It was a long time ago, I was just a young chap and it was a double bill, so I get them mixed up!
Arty angle of arty seat.
I like these sculptures. There's a really good otter one near Merton but every time I ride past there's someone sat on it so it must be comfortable as well as decorative! I shall endeavour to get a picture sometime.
I've called these Kestrels but I suppose they could be a different sort of bird of prey. Buzzards are common in North Devon, but they remind me of Kestrels. I really should read the book, I'd probably know then.
